Wine Business Finance Workshops

Overview

These workshops offer an overview of the financial and accounting concepts that will enable you to make better business decisions and advance your career. Taught by wine industry professionals in the finance and accounting fields, each course is tailored to explore core finance and accounting concepts presented from a wine industry perspective to provide knowledge that can be immediately applied to your business or organization. 

Wine industry professionals with limited experience in finance and accounting can take these workshops to gain practical knowledge and financial literacy skills.  Alternatively, finance and accounting professionals can take these workshops to expand and deepen their knowledge of best practices in finance and accounting for the wine industry or to earn CPE credits towards maintaining CPA licensure.

These wine business workshops are open to the public and may be taken individually. All workshops are offered in-person on the SSU campus. 

Note: These Wine Business Finance workshops are no longer required to complete the Wine Industry Finance & Accounting Certificate, students who have previously begun the Certificate in Wine Industry Finance & Accounting can contact the WBI Program Office for more information: 707-664-3235.

Understanding the Numbers: An Introduction to Wine Business Finance

In this course, students will be introduced to general accounting concepts and how they relate to some of the unique issues of the wine industry. Students will learn how to read, interpret and improve the financial results of a winery using the case study method, and by completing group and individual activities. Attendees will gain new perspectives on the drivers of financial success in the wine industry and how to impact them.

Prerequisite: Managing by the Numbers by Chuck Kremer (It is highly recommended that students familiarize themselves with this text in advance of the workshop, especially for those with less experience in the finance & accounting fields.)

Budgeting & Financial Analysis for the Wine Industry

This course will explore the essential components involved in developing a successful budget and forecasting methods, starting with a framework to understand strategic, business, and operational models. Throughout the course, students will explore various ways to analyze budgets, identify key performance indicators, and build reporting structures that will help any business professional make financial and budgetary decisions. Whether starting or expanding a wine business, this course will help change and improve the way you manage your financial operations.

Vineyard & Winery Taxation Strategies

From the development of vineyard property through the production of wine and final sales, this course will cover tax accounting principles and strategies for vineyards and wineries.  The course will include a focus on special farming provisions, tax elections and vineyard depreciation methods as well as various tax strategies for inventory costing, selection of accounting methods, depreciation and other unique taxation rules and planning opportunities available to vineyard and winery owners and management teams.

Designed for winery owners, accountant, bookkeepers, entrepreneurs, and others seeking a complete understanding of the cost of producing wine, this course will demystify the most complex aspects of winery accounting. By helping students develop an accurate understanding of the true costs of their product this course will enable students to build sustainable and profitable pricing strategies for various wine business models.
